Ranjit Gupta

Before joining the Indian Foreign Service, Ranjit Gupta worked as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science at Allahabad University and later worked as a Management Trainee with Hindustan Lever. Since joining the Indian Foreign Service on July 1, 1964, Mr. Gupta has held several positions the most important of which are: Director, Ministry of External Affairs, New Delhi (Head of West Asia & North Africa Division), 1982-83; Ambassador of India to Yemen, 1983-85; Ambassador of India to Venezuela; Consul General to the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba, 1986-89; Ambassador of India to the Sultanate of Oman, 1989-94; Ambassador of India to Thailand; Permanent Representative of India to UN Escape, 1994-97; Ambassador of India to Spain; Permanent Representative of India to the World Tourism Organization; Ambassador of India to the Principality of Andorra, 1998-99; and Ambassador in Residence at Jawaharlal Nehru University & Secretary, Ministry of External Affairs, New Delhi, 1999-2000. On April 30, 2000, Mr. Gupta retired From Foreign Service.

After retiring from the Foreign Service, Mr. Gupta served as Director-General of the India-Taipei Association, Taipei, Taiwan, from 2000 until 2003. Since returning home in June 2003, Mr. Gupta has prepared and presented papers at think-tanks in India on various aspects of India-China-US relations. Mr. Gupta has also participated in workshops on this theme in India, Australia, Taiwan, and the United States.
